Electrolysis Length of Process

The hair follicle is ever changing in its growth stages, which affects the overall time factor needed for permanent results. For this reason, a series of treatments is required. We consider it a “process of elimination”, since we only treat hair that are visible. And then, when new hair comes in, we also need to treat those. Eventually, treatment times become shorter in length and spaced further apart.

A Brief History of Electrolysis

It was Dr. Charles Michael who discovered electrolysis in 1875, when he was trying to eliminate an ingrown eyelash from one of his patients. His technique of inserting a fine wire filament into the hair follicle and applying a small amount of current to the hair root proved to be successful.

It is the only method of hair removal recognized by the American Medical Association (AMA) and the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) as achieving permanent hair removal. It is the gold standard by which all other methods of hair removal are being compared. Not only can we remove the hair forever, but our treatments are safe to perform, and leave your skin healthy. Electrolysis is safe and effective treatments.

Minnesota Electrolysis FAQs

How does electrolysis work?

A single-use, sterile probe is inserted into the hair follicle. A short current heats up the follicle and destroys its ability to grow hair. While other methods like laser hair removal REDUCE unwanted hair, electrolysis is the only FDA-approved method for PERMANENT hair removal.

Who is a good candidate for electrolysis?

Electrolysis is effective on all hair colors and skin types for those who are generally in good health.  If any of the following conditions apply, you may not receive electrolysis:

  • Pacemakers or implanted defibrillators – The electrical current may interfere with the device’s function.
  • Active cancer in the treatment area.
  • Metal implants in the treatment area.
  • Active skin infections (e.g., bacterial, viral, or fungal).
  • Uncontrolled diabetes – Can affect healing and increase infection risk.
  • Epilepsy (for some methods or devices, unless cleared by a physician).

These conditions require caution, postponed treatment or medical clearance before proceeding:

  • Pregnancy – Generally avoided, especially on the abdomen, breasts, or pubic area due to hormonal sensitivity and lack of safety data.
  • Recent sunburn or tanning – Increases risk of irritation or pigmentation changes.
  • Skin disorders (eczema, psoriasis, dermatitis) in the treatment area.
  • Keloid or hypertrophic scarring tendency – Higher risk of scarring post-treatment.
  • Circulatory disorders or poor wound healing.
  • Use of certain medications, such as:
     ·  Topical retinoid (Isotretinoin /Accutane, Retin-A/tretinoin, Differin/Adapalene, Tazorac/Tazarotene) – Avoid for at least 6–12 months post-use.
     ·  Anticoagulants (blood thinners) – May increase bruising or bleeding risk.
     ·  Steroids – Can thin the skin and delay healing.
  • Recent cosmetic procedures (chemical peels, microdermabrasion, laser, Botox, fillers) — wait for appropriate healing time.

What areas can be treated?

Hairline, face/chin, eyebrows, upper lip, outer ears, nape, hands, and toes. We also provide underarm and bikini line clean-up only.

Does electrolysis hurt?

Most people describe the sensation as a quick stinging feeling each time the current is applied to a hair follicle. The intensity depends on your pain tolerance and area being treated.

What should I expect at my first appointment?

You will complete forms, including a medical history form and consent for treatment. We will review your medical history and discuss any contraindications related to your medical conditions, medications, skin conditions or injuries, or implanted devices.

We will discuss the area to be treated. We explain how electrolysis works. We will provide pre- and post-treatment care.

What should I do to prepare for my treatment?

Stay hydrated! Drink plenty of water 24-48 hours before your appointment. This will make a significant impact on your comfort and results. Keep the skin moisturized and avoid excess sun exposure. Hydration is critical!

If you are sensitive to pain, you may manage your pain with a topical numbing cream, Tylenol, Advil or Aspirin 30 minutes before your appointment. Cold compresses before and after help calm the skin as well.

Avoid caffeine, soda or sugar; do not smoke 2-3 hours before your appointment.

What are the post-treatment recommendations?

Keep your skin clean by gently applying an antiseptic such as witch hazel, Aquaphor or Vitamin E as needed. Avoid touching the treated area and wash your hands frequently. Avoid exfoliants and topical acid creams for 48 hours.

Avoid tanning and direct sun exposure for 48 hours.

Do not workout on the same day because perspiration will cause breakouts.

Do not pick, squeeze, rub or scratch the treated area. Allow it to heal. Some people may experience hyperpigmentation or spots, but do not pick the treated area!

Can I shave, tweeze, thread or wax between appointments?

You may shave or clip hair between appointments. Do not tweeze, thread or wax.

What are the side effects of electrolysis?

Common side effects include redness, swelling, and mild irritation, which usually subside within a few hours. You may experience crusts or pustules, which should be left alone until they heal. Following proper aftercare instructions can help minimize these effects.

Can electrolysis treat blond, red, grey and white hair?

Yes, we can treat all hair colors and skin tones.

How many treatment sessions will I need?

The number of treatments you’ll need varies for every person. Some factors affecting your treatment include genetics, the area being treated, hair removal treatment before electrolysis, density and type of hair, medical conditions, medications, hormones, and stress. Equally impactful is a person’s tolerance and commitment to the treatment schedule/plan. View our service prices.

Can I have electrolysis during my menstrual cycle?

Yes, it is safe to receive treatment. However, some women may notice increased sensitivity as a result of hormonal changes. Lower estrogen levels can also slow the healing process, leading to slightly delayed recovery. If you’re already experiencing symptoms such as bloating or fatigue, the additional stress of treatment could make these symptoms feel more uncomfortable.

Do you treat teens?

Yes, it is recommended that girls have their menstrual cycle for one year before their first treatment (see note above about “Can I have electrolysis during my menstrual cycle?).

Please note that the pain tolerance threshold for teens is generally much lower.  Teens will also continue to experience hormonal changes for years to come. This may require additional treatment. Please read through the information above regarding, “Who is a good candidate for electrolysis?” for a list of acne-related contraindications.

We want treatment to be efficient and effective. It’s critical that your teen stick with the treatment plan to achieve results. At your consultation appointment, the electrologist will discuss whether your teen is a good candidate.
